WE’RE FED UP!
We need healthier food on our shelves, now
Healthy foods are more than twice as expensive than less healthy foods, and less available
"They know what they're doing and it's just to get you to buy their products. It drives me insane."
Victoria, London
For every £1 spent on advertising fruit and vegetables, £18 is spent on advertising confectionery, snacks, desserts and soft drinks
"We all deserve the right to have a high street that's got healthy, affordable food shops. I feel really strongly about that."
Zoe, London
Nationally, 1 in 4 food outlets in England are fast food businesses, and it’s nearly 1 in 3 in the most deprived areas
"Every two feet there's a chicken shop: chicken shop here, chicken shop here, chicken shop on the opposite side."
Dave, Bristol
People across the UK are calling for the government to:
- Make our food healthier, more affordable and accessible, no matter where we live.
- Hold food companies accountable for improving our health, not undermining it.
- Protect our children from harmful food marketing.
- Give us clear, honest information that we can trust.
- Put us and our communities at the heart of decisions about our local food system.
- Create welcoming community spaces where we can all access and share healthy food.
Join the nationwide call to hold companies accountable for ensuring healthy food is the easy, affordable option for everyone
What happens if I add my name?
Just like a petition, we’ll then hand every name on the map to our Government later this year asking them to act on our calls.
We will send you very occasional campaign updates and invitations to take more action with us. No personally identifiable information is stored for anyone under the age of 18. See our full privacy policy.
THE PROBLEM
Big food companies are not doing enough to protect people's health.
Across the UK, supermarkets and manufacturers flood our shelves with unhealthy products, push promotions on unhealthy food, and make healthier options harder to find and more expensive. Meanwhile, food-related ill health is rising and the NHS is paying the price. This is a direct result of commercial decisions.
Food companies shape what we see, what’s promoted and what’s affordable. They have the power to make food healthier, but they won’t act unless they are required to.
In the meantime:
Food-related ill health is rising
Children’s health is worsening
The NHS is under strain
Voluntary action from industry has failed
This is a collective public call to demand that Government to hold big food accountable for providing us with healthy, affordable food.
THE FACTS
Healthy foods are more than twice as expensive per calorie than less healthy foods and less available.
7 out of 10 food items from Britain’s biggest producers are ultra-processed.
95% of children are eating too much sugar.
A quarter of all food outlets in England are fast-food businesses rising to nearly a third in the most deprived areas.
A new tax on unhealthy food companies could raise £2.9 – 3.4 billion a year, which can be spent on children’s health and access to good food.
Recipe for Change
We are calling for an industry levy to help make food healthier.
