New campaign ‘Making Food Fair in Essex’ joins We’re Fed Up!
Recipe for Change is delighted to welcome ‘Making Food Fair in Essex’, a new campaign launched by Essex County Council, as a supporter of We’re Fed Up!
‘Making Food Fair in Essex’ is calling for action to create a fairer food environment across Essex and is encouraging residents to back the calls of We’re Fed Up! and add their names to our campaign.
New research commissioned by Essex County Council (ECC) found that three in four Essex residents (76%) say unhealthier food is easier to find that healthier options, and nearly a third said making healthier choices was difficult. These findings closely match concerns highlighted by our own polling and recent data from the Food Foundation's Broken Plate report, which show that healthier food is too often less available, less affordable and less visible than less healthy alternatives.
The research also found that:
- One in three Essex residents says price affects whether they buy less healthy food
- 66% of food and drink advertising in Essex promotes less healthy products
- There are almost 70 fast-food outlets for every 100,000 people in Essex
These findings reinforce the growing evidence that people are being let down by a food system which floods our shelves with less healthy food and makes these the easiest to buy.
As we build towards the We’re Fed Up! parliamentary hand in on the 2nd of November, we are proud to be working alongside Essex County Council to highlight the need for healthier, more affordable food for everyone. Representatives from Making Food Fair in Essex will be joining us at the event in Parliament to help amplify the call for change.
